Si vis perfectus esse

In Matthew 19, Jesus tells a young man what he must do to enter into life: he must keep the commandments. When the young man tells Him that he has kept the commandments and asks what is yet wanting unto him, Jesus tells him at verse 21 that, if he will be perfect, he is to sell all his possessions, give the money to the poor and follow Him. This entry will look at how Latin, Polish and Friulian render the words of Jesus if thou will be perfect, spoken to the young man.

Latin. Si vis perfectus esse. The Latin for the volitional thou wilt, second-person singular, is tu vis, or simply vis; in contrast, the Latin for the volitional you will, second-person plural, is vos vultis, or simply vultis. Consider the following: vis (thou wilt); si vis (if thou will). The Latin adjective perfectus means perfect, and the infinitive esse means to be. Vocabulary: si (if); vis (thou wilt); perfectus (perfect); esse (to be). Wherefore: Si vis perfectus esse (if thou will be perfect).

Polish. Jeśli chcesz być doskonały. The Polish for the volitional thou wilt, second-person singular, is ty chcesz, or simply chcesz; in contrast, the Polish for the volitional you will, second-person plural, is wy chcecie, or simply chcecie. Consider the following: chcesz (thou wilt); jeśli chcesz (if thou will). The Polish for to be is the imperfective być, and the adjective doskonały means perfect. Vocabulary: jeśli (if); chcesz (thou wilt); być (to be); doskonały (perfect). Wherefore: Jeśli chcesz być doskonały (if thou will be perfect).

Friulian. Se tu vuelis jessi perfet. The Friulian for the volitional thou wilt, second-person singular, is tu tu vuelis, or simply tu vuelis; in contrast, the Friulian for the volitional you will, second-person plural, is vualtris o volês, or simply o volês. Consider the following: tu vuelis (thou wilt); se tu vuelis (if thou will). The Friulian infinitive jessi means to be, and the adjective perfet means perfect. Vocabulary: se (if); tu vuelis (thou wilt); jessi (to be); perfet (perfect). Wherefore: Se tu vuelis jessi perfet (if thou will be perfect).

The reader will find below the text of Matthew 19:21 in Latin, Polish and Friulian, for his consideration.

Polish (Biblia Tysiąclecia): Jezus mu odpowiedział: «Jeśli chcesz być doskonały, idź, sprzedaj, co posiadasz, i daj ubogim, a będziesz miał skarb w niebie. Potem przyjdź i chodź za Mną!».

Friulian (Bibie par un popul): Jesù a lui: “Se tu vuelis jessi perfet, va, vent ce che tu âs e dalu ai puars, e cussì tu varâs un tesaur tal cîl; po ven daûr di me”.
